Xbox controller tester

Xbox pads are the reference layout for the Gamepad API, so every input maps one-to-one: A B X Y, bumpers, analog triggers, the Share button on Series controllers and both clickable sticks.

Testing an Xbox controller on PC

Connect the pad with a USB-C cable (Series X|S), micro-USB (Xbox One) or the wireless adapter. Bluetooth also works on Xbox One S and later controllers: hold the pairing button on top until the Xbox logo flashes, then add it in your computer's Bluetooth settings. Press the Xbox button once and the tester shows the controller as Xbox Wireless Controller or Xbox 360 Controller.

Walk through the inputs in this order: the four face buttons, D-pad in all eight directions, bumpers, then pull each trigger slowly and watch the bar fill from 0 to 100%. Finally rotate each stick around its outer edge, release it and confirm the readout returns to 0.00.

Common Xbox controller faults this test reveals

  • Left stick drift on Xbox One and Series pads after heavy use. Run the stick drift test for a precise percentage.
  • Trigger not reaching 100%, usually dust in the Hall sensor housing or a worn magnet on Xbox One triggers.
  • Bumper double-click or no click, a known mechanical wear point on Xbox One generation one controllers.
  • Sync drops showing as the controller disappearing for a moment, typically a weak battery or Bluetooth interference.
  • Missing rumble in one grip after a fall.

Xbox Accessories app vs online test

The Xbox Accessories app on Windows and Xbox can update firmware and remap buttons but does not show raw stick values or polling rate. Use this page to measure the actual numbers, then the app if you need a firmware update. Xbox controllers have no built-in stick recalibration, so drift beyond a comfortable deadzone means a stick module replacement or warranty claim.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tester work with an Xbox 360 controller?

Yes, wired Xbox 360 pads and the wireless receiver are recognised on Windows through the built-in driver. Wireless 360 controllers need the official or a compatible USB receiver.

Which button is the Share button on Series controllers?

It usually appears as button 17 and is only visible when the controller is connected over USB or through the Xbox wireless adapter. Over Bluetooth some operating systems do not expose it.

Can I test an Xbox controller on Mac?

Yes. macOS 11 and later support Xbox Series and One controllers over Bluetooth and USB natively. Open this page in Chrome or Safari and press the Xbox button.
