PS4 controller tester

The DualShock 4 is still one of the most used PC controllers. Check it here: buttons, triggers, sticks, rumble and whether it holds a stable connection.

Connecting a DualShock 4

Plug the controller in with a micro-USB data cable or pair it over Bluetooth by holding Share and PS together until the light bar flashes white. Windows, macOS and Linux all recognise the DualShock 4 natively; you do not need DS4Windows for this test. If DS4Windows or Steam is running, the pad may show up as an Xbox controller instead, which is fine for testing but hides the touchpad click.

Typical DualShock 4 problems

  • Right stick drift is slightly more common than left on the DS4 because of the camera-heavy games it is used for. Check both.
  • Worn stick rubber that makes the stick catch on the outer ring; visible as a jagged trail when you rotate it.
  • L2 or R2 sticking at 10 to 20% after release; shown as a bar that never returns to zero.
  • Bluetooth stutter, visible as the polling rate dropping below 30 Hz, usually from a low battery or a laptop's crowded 2.4 GHz band.
  • Micro-USB port wear, which makes the controller disconnect when the cable moves.

Resetting a DualShock 4

If buttons register randomly or the pad will not pair, press the reset pinhole on the back next to the L2 screw with a paperclip for five seconds, then reconnect over USB. This clears the pairing table and often fixes ghost inputs. It does not recalibrate the sticks; use the calibration guide for that.

Frequently asked questions

Does the touchpad show in the tester?

The touchpad click is reported as button 17 on most systems. Finger position on the touchpad is not part of the Gamepad API.

Can I test a PS4 controller on an Android phone?

Yes, pair it over Bluetooth and open this page in Chrome for Android. All buttons and sticks are reported.

Why does the light bar stay on during the test?

Over Bluetooth the DualShock 4 keeps the light bar lit as a connection indicator. It cannot be dimmed from a web page.
